Val Gardena, Italy
St. Ulrich/Ortisei, Val Gardena
In the midst of the Dolomites lies the Gardena Valley with three well-known ski resorts: St. Ulrich (Ortisei), the largest, at the beginning of the valley, picturesque St. Christina (S. Christina) in the middle and Wolkensteirn (Selva) which lies at the end of the valley.
Val Gardena became known in ski circles when the World Championships were held there in 1970. Each year since, the resort hosts a World Cup downhill race. Buying the "Dolomiti Superski" pass gives access to one of the greatest "Ski Circuses" in the Alps with over 450 lifts and 750 miles of interconnected trails. The "Sella Ronda" is an 18 mile tour around the Sella mountains, through 8 ski areas, with stops along the way for sunning and lunch, returning in late afternoon to St. Ulrich.
The people of this region have a Germanic passion for detail and hard work, so everything runs smoothly; and they also have the Italian love of life, so they play as hard as anyone in the world enjoying great music and food. The cooking is a wonderful marriage of Italian creativity with pastas and wines and German hardiness with meat and potatoes. There is extensive snow making throughout the Gardena Valley.
Altitude of resort (St Ulrich): 4,078ft. Highest point served by lift: 8,796ft. Vertical drop: 4,718ft. X-country trails: 110 miles. Ski Terrain: Beginner 30%, Intermediate 50%, Expert 20% Transfer time from Munich: 5 hours, Venice: 4 hours.
