ZERMATT:
Dominated by the majestic peak of the Matterhorn, Zermatt is a charming and compact village. No cars are allowed in town, so skiers and non-skiers can walk peacefully along picturesque streets. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from one end of the resort to the other. Favored by its southern exposure, sheltered from the wind and generously endowed with snow, Zermatt boasts some of the most spectacular skiig in the Alps. The scope and variety of skiing is tremendous with a network of lifts serving trails that rise to over 12,500 ft.

Three main ski area (Blauherd/Sunegga, Gornergrat/Stockhorn and Schwarzsee/Theodulpass) offer wide open slopes for beginners while the more advanced skiers enjoy the challenge of the internationally known Stockhorn, Tiefbach, Aroleid and Momatt. The Klein Matterhorn, ascending to 12,533 ft which is the highest aerial cablecar in the Alps, opens up glacier ski runs which give Zermatt one of the longest seasons in Europe. The apres-ski life has something for everyone--sophisticated nightclubs, informal discos and tea-dancing. One highlight of a visit to Zermatt is a ski tour over the Theodulpass to Cervinia, Italy, about 10 miles away, for lunch. Several new high speed chairlifts have been built recently and more are planned.

HOTEL ALEX:
Called by the media "the most deluxe hut in the Alps", the Hotel Alex, a member of the Boutique Hotels International, is set back from the main street in a quiet location very close to the Gornergrat cog rail station. It was built in 1960-61 by Alex Perren, one of Zermatt's most famous mountain guides. Alex is related (4 generations back) to the guides hired by Wymper, the first man to climb the Matterhorn. Alex and his Austrian wife Gisela have developed the hotel with service and alpine ambiance in mind. The next generation has taken over the management of the hotel and have added many luxuries including jacuzzi baths in every room and an Internet Corner with WI-FI in public areas. The hotel is noted for its artistic designs. Beams and wooden carvings from 1000 year old houses were used to give the hotel an authentic look and feel. Antiques and a big collection of original paintings line the wallls. The bar, with fireplace, has lots of cozy sitting areas. There is a huge indoor pool, saunas, steambath, jacuzzi and a large fitness area with modern machines. An indoor tennis court and squash courts round out the hotel amenities. The service and friendliness of the hotel staff is unmatched.
