The Glacier Express is one of Switzerland's most famous train excursions. It has been operating since 1930 and is billed as "the world's slowest express train". It averages 22mph during the approximately 7 1/2 hour journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt. The 169 miles of narrow-gauge track are punctuated by 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. Trains reach a peak elevation of 6,670 ft at the Oberalp Pass near Andermatt. Perhaps best known for winning two silver medals in skiing at the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Penny has taken her European ski racing experience and successfully run ski and hiking trips to the Alps for thirty years. Her knowledge of the mountains, the people, and the countries combined with her ability to speak German and French fluently make for great trips - well organized, educational and fun. Penny personally escorts each trip, but gauges the abilities of the individuals when deciding daily adventures.
